About Helena

Art Therapist

I am a HPCSA (Reg. AT 0001775) registered Art Therapist working in private practice. I received my Master’s degree in Art Therapy at PennWest Edinboro University, in PA, USA. I have worked with a diverse range of clients in different countries such as Thailand, the UK and South Africa. I am also a lecturer for the Master’s Art Therapy programme at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), which is the first university in the South Africa to pioneer this profession.

I have been working in the mental health field since 2011 and I am so grateful for the personal growth these experiences have provided me over the years. I use the creative process to support my development and I am continuously learning and growing as a person. I live in Johannesburg with my family and dogs, and love spending time in nature. Needless to say, I love exploring with different art media and processes. I am also a yoga and Pilates teacher, dancer, and Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) practitioner (hence my gravitation towards
providing Eco-art therapy).

I have worked with many individuals and groups who arrived with various struggles and difficulties. During this time, I have found art to be great medium to help people express their thoughts more clearly so that awareness and meaning can take place. We all have unique stories to tell and once we allow them to unfold, personal transformation can begin.

Approach

I am sensitive to the larger cultural, spiritual, and family contexts that shape and inform us. My professional training allows me to use an eclectic approach to ensure that each person’s unique personality and situation is treated accordingly. My techniques include Person-centred, Jungian, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness-Based therapy, Positive Psychology, DBT, and Eco-art therapy.

My experience includes working with clients in psychiatric recovery, as well as clients with special needs. I also provide support for individuals who are going through difficult life transitions, and/or who are struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement, trauma, low self-esteem, gender or sexual identity/issues, substance abuse, eating disorders, relational difficulties, physical/emotional abuse, and others. I offer a supportive, mindful and creative space for my clients to imbue a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-compassion. I have a special interest in working with adolescents and adults.
